“Velocity Energy provided an elegantly simple turnkey solution that not only gives us the reliable, increased emergency generation capacity we need, but also provides us with a healthy income stream from what would otherwise be sunken assets.”

Caboolture / Kilcoy Hospitals
Project #1: Overview
Caboolture hospital was experiencing back up energy constraints on its existing Detroit 840kVA “black change” emergency generator. Velocity Energy was engaged to:
- complete the installation of a new, Cummins 1400kVA generator;
- refit the existing generator control system to share the load across both generators;
- ensure the reliability of the system;
- provide power-interruption-free testing with the mains grid.
Project #1: What we did
We conducted a site visit and a thorough audit and assessment to scope technical requirements. We increased the reliability of the existing generator by debugging issues and addressing faults identified in the audit.
Custom design, build, installation and testing of Remote Control Interface
We installed an advanced yet robust control solution to allow parallel operation testing and recovery of supply from the mains grid.
Design and installation of an aggregation, scheduling and dispatch system
We provided a metering solution (‘’) which enables a revenue stream from connection to the grid.
Transition to bio-fuel
We enabled both generators to transition safely to bio-fuel.
Connection to the grid
We streamlined Caboolture hospital’s participation in our Smart Grid virtual power station program by preparing and negotiating the Distribution Network Service Provider generator connection agreement with Energex, to legally permit the hospital’s generators to connect to the grid.
Ongoing maintenance and testing
We conduct regular maintenance and on-load testing to detect issues long before they can become a risk ensuring the generators are 100% reliable and operating optimally at all times.
Project #1: Outcome
100% reliable emergency power generation and an additional income stream.
Project #2: Overview
When Caboolture Hospital underwent a significant capacity expansion in 2011, they trusted – and immediately engaged - Velocity Energy to upgrade the installation design and connection of their new Perkins 875kVA generator.
Project #2: What we have done
In addition to the initial audit and assessment, we negotiated with the numerous parties involved to reduce costs. We have also provided revised specifications for the Main Switch Board to simplify the complexity and reduce the components required.
Project #2: What we will do
Installation and connection
When the new generator is delivered, we have been retained to install the control system which will provide interruption free parallel operation with the mains grid supply to again permit the generator to immediately gain a generous income stream from participation in our Smart Grid virtual power station program. Once again, the scope of our work will include management of all communication and negotiation of the generator connection agreement with Energex.
Ongoing maintenance and testing
We will be responsible for conducting regular maintenance and on-load testing on all 3 generators to ensure 100% reliability and optimal operation at all times.
Project #2: Outcome
The final project will include installation, synchronisation with existing generators, and connection to the grid for revenue generation, of an additional 875kVA emergency generator capacity. Switchboard and controls upgrades to effectively manage the increased reserve power capacity will also be completed.
